WASHINGTON — August 22, 2026:The war with Iran has pushed the United States into a new kind of economic battle. Instead of depending only on military strength, Washington is now using its biggest economic advantages — the dollar, global finance, energy production and access to international markets — to increase pressure on Tehran.

The idea behind the strategy is straightforward: make it increasingly difficult and expensive for Iran to earn money, move money and conduct international business.

Oil is at the centre of this plan. Iran depends heavily on energy exports, and Washington wants to restrict the networks that transport Iranian oil and bring the revenue back into the country. By targeting shipping companies, financial intermediaries and traders, the United States hopes to reduce Tehran's economic room to manoeuvre.

But Washington is also looking beyond Iran.

Countries and companies that continue doing major business with Tehran could find themselves under American pressure. This could become especially important for China, which has maintained significant economic ties with Iran. If companies believe that trading with Iran could threaten their access to American markets or financial institutions, many may choose to step away.

That is where America's economic strength becomes a strategic weapon.

The U.S. dollar remains deeply connected to international trade and finance. Washington can therefore use access to its financial system as leverage without directly confronting every country involved in Iranian trade.

However, the strategy carries its own risks.

A prolonged conflict around Iran could disrupt energy supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, potentially pushing oil and transportation costs higher. That could increase inflation not only in Europe and Asia but also inside the United States.

America therefore faces a difficult calculation. It wants to weaken Iran economically while protecting its own consumers and businesses from the consequences of a wider energy shock.

The bigger American strategy appears to be a combination of economic pressure, energy security, financial influence and diplomatic alliances

If Washington succeeds, the United States could emerge from the conflict with even greater influence over global trade and finance. But if sanctions create higher energy prices and encourage countries to build alternative financial systems outside the dollar, the long-term result could be very different.

The Iran conflict has therefore opened a much larger economic contest.

The next battle may not be fought in the skies or on the ground. **It could be fought through oil markets, banks, shipping companies, currencies and international trade — with America's economic power at the centre of it all.**
