India holds around 7.23 million tonnes of rare-earth oxide resources, with major deposits associated with mineral sands along the coasts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Resources have also been identified in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

These minerals are strategically important for electric vehicles because rare-earth elements such as neodymium and praseodymium are used in powerful permanent magnets for high-efficiency motors.

India is now working to build domestic rare-earth magnet manufacturing capacity. If mining, refining and magnet production are developed together, the country could reduce import dependence, strengthen its EV supply chain and create new opportunities for local motor and component manufacturers.

India’s rare-earth reserves could therefore become more than a mineral resource—they could become a key foundation for the country’s electric-mobility ambitions.
