India has taken a major step toward building its own mobile technology ecosystem with BharOS, an indigenous mobile operating system developed by J and K Ops. Pvt. Limited, an IIT Madras-incubated company.
BharOS was developed with support from the IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation and was officially introduced in January 2023. The system is based on the Android Open Source Project, but its design focuses on greater user control, privacy and security.
Unlike conventional Android installations, BharOS was designed with No Default Apps, allowing users to choose the applications they want rather than being forced to use a pre-installed set of services. It also includes security-focused updates and a Private App Store Service for organisations requiring controlled access to trusted applications.
The project is aimed particularly at organisations handling sensitive information and requiring secure communications. Its development reflects India’s broader effort to strengthen domestic digital capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign technology platforms.
BharOS therefore represents an important Indian experiment in creating a more locally controlled mobile software ecosystem, while remaining compatible with the broader Android-based technology environment.
