MADRID —Spain’s worsening housing crisis has triggered large street protests in Madrid, with tenants demanding stronger protection and affordable housing.

Public anger intensified after 87-year-old María del Carmen “Maricarmen” Abascal, who had lived in the same rented home for decades, was evicted following a dispute over sharply increased rent. Her case has become a symbol of the difficulties faced by elderly and long-term tenants as housing costs rise.

Thousands of protesters have taken to Madrid’s streets, calling for rent relief, greater tenant protection and action to expand affordable housing. The demonstrations highlight a growing national debate over whether ordinary families can continue to afford homes in Spain’s major cities.
