India’s proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30 has been deferred after the Indian Banks’ Association and the United Forum of Bank Unions reached an understanding late Sunday. A high-level committee will examine the long-standing demand for a five-day banking week, with all Saturdays as holidays.

The unions had also raised concerns over the Performance Linked Incentive scheme, pension improvements, dearness allowance for retirees and other service-related issues. The government had already kept the PLI scheme in abeyance, while the latest agreement provides for further discussions on the remaining issues.

The strike was called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of seven bank employees’ and officers’ unions, representing around 90% of the banking workforce according to union claims.
