A Canadian-registered Gulfstream G100 medical transport aircraft carrying six people disappeared over the Atlantic while flying from Bermuda to Boston. The aircraft, operated by Hamilton, Ontario-based Latitude Air Ambulance, was carrying two pilots, two medical crew members, a patient and the patient’s family member.
The jet departed Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport early Saturday and was approaching the U.S. coast when the crew reported electrical problems and declared an emergency. Air-traffic controllers subsequently struggled to maintain communication, while flight data showed the aircraft rapidly losing altitude before disappearing from tracking systems.
A debris field believed to belong to the missing aircraft was later discovered off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. U.S. Coast Guard crews conducted an extensive search covering more than 1,600 square miles, but the six people aboard remained unaccounted for.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash. Investigators are expected to examine the reported electrical failure, rapid descent, weather conditions and the loss of communications as they work to establish what happened during the final minutes of the flight.
