Belgian-American physicist Francis Halzen has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from cosmic sources.

Built deep beneath the Antarctic ice, IceCube uses thousands of light sensors across roughly a cubic kilometre of ice to capture the faint signals produced when elusive neutrinos interact with matter. These almost ghost-like particles can travel enormous distances through space, carrying clues from some of the universe’s most powerful events.

Halzen first envisioned using Antarctic ice to detect neutrinos decades ago. His work has helped establish neutrino astronomy, giving scientists a completely new way to study the cosmos beyond conventional light-based telescopes.
