Persistent wildfires in Indonesia are spreading hazardous smoke across Southeast Asia, triggering health concerns and a dramatic surge in demand for air purifiers.

The prolonged fires have blanketed parts of the region in toxic haze, worsening air quality, increasing respiratory complaints and forcing school closures in affected areas. Neighbouring countries, including Malaysia and Singapore, have also experienced serious pollution episodes.

The crisis is driving a sharp rise in demand for protective equipment. Retailer Courts reported a 600% increase in air-purifier sales

between September 28 and October 12 compared with the same period last year. A medical equipment supplier near Kuala Lumpur also reported a 35% rise in sales amid growing demand for oxygen equipment.

Experts warn that prolonged exposure to wildfire pollution could cause lasting health problems, particularly for children and people with existing respiratory conditions. Hot, dry weather and fires burning in forest and peatland areas have made the situation harder to control.

As firefighting operations continue, the crisis highlights the urgent need for stronger wildfire prevention and regional cooperation to tackle cross-border air pollution.
