Powerful Typhoon Champi has forced Taiwan to largely shut down as authorities prepare for dangerous winds and torrential rain, while the storm is also disrupting flights and military activities in Japan.
The storm, which was previously classified as a super typhoon, has weakened but continues to produce winds of around 191 km/h near its centre. Taiwan has warned of potentially severe rainfall, with nearly a metre possible in mountainous northern areas.
Authorities cancelled hundreds of domestic and international flights as the storm approached, while financial markets and many schools and offices were closed. Nearly 1,300 people have been evacuated from vulnerable mountainous areas, and one person has died while dozens have been injured.
The storm is expected to pass close to northeastern Taiwan before moving toward southern Japan. In Japan, more than 100 flights have already been cancelled, affecting thousands of passengers.
Champi has also forced changes to **Keen Sword**, a major U.S.-Japan military exercise involving tens of thousands of personnel. Training schedules are being adjusted according to weather conditions to protect participants.
The storm's wide reach has placed much of the region on alert, with authorities warning residents to avoid coastal and mountainous areas as dangerous winds, heavy rain and high waves continue.
