Tensions across the Middle East have intensified sharply after a deadly gunfight near Hebron in the occupied West Bank left two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian gunmen dead. The incident has prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order preparations for a wider security operation and a possible full closure of the West Bank.

Israeli authorities said the Palestinian gunmen opened fire near a military checkpoint before being killed by Israeli forces. Three other Israeli soldiers were wounded in the exchange. Following the attack, Netanyahu ordered Hebron to be cordoned off and directed security forces to prepare for a broader West Bank lockdown.

During a visit to the area, Netanyahu warned that Israeli forces would enter the neighbourhood from which the attackers allegedly came, conduct house-to-house searches, remove residents, seize weapons and target what he described as militant infrastructure. He also indicated that the operation could be expanded to other parts of the West Bank.

The developments come at an especially sensitive moment for Israel, with elections approaching and tensions already high across the occupied territory. A broader military campaign could significantly increase restrictions on Palestinian movement and raise fears of further violence.

At the same time, the confrontation between Washington and Tehran has entered another dangerous phase. Tom Barrack, the U.S. ambassador to Turkey and special envoy dealing with Syria and Iraq, said there was “absolutely” a possibility of a U.S. strike against Iran as early as this weekend. He also stressed that President Donald Trump remained open to a diplomatic agreement.

Iran has continued to issue warnings against further U.S. military action. The confrontation is unfolding alongside growing concerns over shipping security in and around the Strait of Hormuz, where recent attacks and threats against commercial vessels have raised fears of another major disruption to regional trade and global energy supplies.

The United States is also reducing staffing at several Middle Eastern diplomatic missions because of increased security concerns, while non-essential American personnel and their families have already been ordered to leave Saudi Arabia.

With the West Bank facing the prospect of a wider Israeli operation and Washington and Tehran exchanging increasingly serious military warnings, the region is confronting multiple potential flashpoints simultaneously. Any further escalation could have consequences far beyond Israel, Palestine and Iran, particularly for regional security, commercial shipping and global energy markets.
